Lois E. Hole Elementary Opening Ceremony with Premier Notley and Minister Eggen - Sept. 5th 2017
With 53 school projects – both new schools and modernizations – opening for students this month, our government’s commitment to meet the needs of Alberta’s growing student population has created approximately 21,600 new student spaces and modernized or replaced an additional 15,000 student spaces.
We are going to keep working to build more modern, state-of-the-art schools like Lois E. Hole to meet the needs of communities like St. Albert. And we will keep working to make life better for Alberta students and families by reducing school fees and keeping class sizes small.
Great to spend the morning with Premier Notley, Minister Eggen, MLA Horne, and the team at Lois E. Hole and St. Albert Public Schools.
Easter Seals Drop Zone Edmonton
My assistant Andrew and I rappelled down the side of the Sutton Place Hotel downtown thanks to Easter Seals! Each year the Easter Seals' Drop Zone event raises money to help support Albertans with disabilities and medical issues, and this year was one their best ever with over $70,000 donated! Participants dress as superheros or film characters and collect sponsors for their rappel. Thank you to everyone who donated and took part in making this great event such a success!
Pride 2017 - St. Albert and Edmonton
Pride is always one of the highlights of summer, and I was happy to have the opportunity to celebrate it not once, but twice in both Edmonton and St. Albert! Thank you to all of my caucus colleagues and volunteers for showing your support, and an even bigger thank you to the organizers that make these great events possible year after year.
You can support an inclusive St. Albert by getting in touch with St. Albert Pride and OutLoud!
Fire and Ice Festival 2017
Our volunteers were happy to spend Family Day helping out at the St. Albert Fire and Ice Festival! This great event featuring ice carving, skating, sleigh rides, and fire dancers is put on by St. Albert Firefighters Union Local 2130, and helps raise money to combat Muscular Dystrophy. We had a wonderful time handing out hot dogs and hot chocolate!
Snowflake Festival 2016
My team and I had a wonderful evening at the St. Albert and District Chamber of Commerce' annual Snowflake Festival! Here are some pictures from the evening.
Alberta Culture Days in St. Albert
Pictures from the re-opening of Juneau House, the grand opening of Founder's Walk Phase II, and Outloud's fundraiser event!
Sod-Turning Ceremony at North Ridge Place Phase II
Photos from the sod-turning ceremony at Sturgeon Foundation's North Ridge Phase II affordable seniors' living residence. I was happy to attend with Alberta's Minister of Seniors and Housing the Hon. Lori Sigurdson, Mayor Nolan Crouse, Councillor Wes Brodhead, and Sturgeon Foundation Executive Director Dennis Magnusson.
Rock'n August 2016
Every August, St. Albert becomes home to one of North America's best car shows: Rock'n August! Since 1996, Rock'n August has raised over $600,000 for diabetes treatment and research within Alberta, thanks to the generous support of many St. Albert businesses and organizations. Rock'n August draws automobile enthusiasts from all over Western Canada and beyond to celebrate the vehicles, music, and culture of decades gone by, all for a great cause.
This year, I was honoured to speak at the kick-off pancake breakfast organized by St. Albert Inn and Suites. I also had the opportunity to present a $3000 cheque to the charity of my choice, thanks to the generosity of the Insurance Bureau of Canada. I was happy to select the St. Albert Food Bank and Community Village to receive this wonderful donation. The work that they do to support St. Albertans in need is extremely significant, and even more so in this economic downturn Alberta is currently facing.
Poundmaker's Lodge Pow Wow 2016
The theme of this years' Pow Wow at Poundmaker's Lodge was 'the Journey to Healing' - a very meaningful title, as our province works together with our indigenous peoples on Treaty 6, 7 and 8 lands to address reconciliation, missing and murdered indigenous women, and the implementation of the UNDRIP.
Visiting Poundmaker's Lodge, a place where so many travel to find healing and personal growth, is always an emotionally moving experience. It was especially moving getting marched in as part of the Grand Entry with guests of honour from Poundmaker's Lodge, the Government of the Northwest Territories, other elders and community representatives, and my colleague the Honorable Richard Feehan, Minister of Indigenous Relations.
#ROXY Film Set Tour
MLA Horne, MLA Woollard, and I were lucky enough to get a behind-the-scenes film set tour of #ROXY, a romantic comedy being filmed at St. Albert's Bellerose High School by Edmonton-based Mosaic Entertainment. #ROXY is based on the classic tale of Cyrano de Bergerac, and the crew is almost entirely local, including over 600 St. Albert kids as extras. Alberta's arts and cultural sector is a huge contributor to our economy, and it's wonderful to see investment right here in St. Albert.
St. Albert International Children's Festival 2016
I had the chance to volunteer at the International Children's Festival in St. Albert! This beautiful festival draws performers and artists from around the world to St. Albert's river valley. This festival of fun for all ages wouldn't be possible without all the hard work from volunteers that make it a success each year.
